Stockyards Championship Rodeo
June 16 & 17 Rodeo Report
The Stockyards Championship Rodeo had an international flare this past weekend with bull riders from not only the United States, but also Brazil, Mexico and France competing. The advantage went to the international cowboys as they won all of the prize money. Angel Palacios hails from Mexico and he rode Rocky Top for 81 points to win Friday night’s bull riding. Alex Cardoza from Sao Paula, Brazil, won Saturday night with an impressive 86 points on Captain Hook. The wins paid each cowboy $500.
DeAndre Jackson from Crossett, AR., won $233.12 with a 9.42 run to win Friday’s tie-down roping. Saturday night’s prize money stayed closer to home with Grandview’s Josh Dunn winning $314.71 with a 10.01.
Lizzy Vaughn won Friday’s breakaway roping and $349.68 with a 12.22 run. Martha Angelone from Hico built on her season lead in the standings Saturday night, winning $233.12 with a 3.19.
Friday’s team roping was a two-header and Coy Hyer and Travis Duncan took the win with 26.23 on two. The Fort Scott, KS., cowboys won $183.48 each. Times were quicker Saturday night with Lane Cooper and Matthew Swinney winning $428.12 each with a 5.7.
Granbury’s Emma Chapman is one of the more consistent barrel racers to compete at the Stockyards Championship Rodeo and she won Friday night with a 14.20 to win $291.40. Sammi Sellers from Stephenville won Saturday night with a 14.49 to win $291.40.
There were several impressive rides in the ranch saddle bronc riding, but it was Avery Bell from Crowell taking home all of the prize money and the championship buckle. He rode Show Me the Money for 72 points to win $500. Jared Svoboda from Tool rode Copper Canyon for 69 points to win the saddle bronc riding and $169.20.
Congratulations to Cole Wheeler and Wesley Thorp for winning national team roping championships in college rodeo. The pair attend Texas Tech University and have competed at the Stockyards Championship Rodeo over the years. They were also last year’s national champions with Wheeler attending Weatherford College and Thorp attending Ranger College.

Each night is a separate rodeo, so contestants can enter and complete both nights. Saturday night is co-sanctioned with the International Professional Rodeo Association and the United Professional Rodeo Association.
