The Latest Report from Billy Huckaby
Stockyards Championship Rodeo
June 8 & 9
We are accustomed to bull riders having a hard time making the buzzer at the Stockyards Championship Rodeo and the prize money rolls over from one performance to the next. But now it is the ranch bronc riders that can’t seem to weather the storm. We have added ranch bronc riding to the Friday night performances throughout the month of June as part of a special buckle series, and both Friday and Saturday night there were no qualified rides, so ranch bronc riding this Friday night will feature $750 in prize money.
Bull riders did step up this weekend but only two managed to hang on for the required eight seconds. Fridaynight it was Austin Deen from Brownwood getting past Rocky Top for 63 points, earning him $1,000. Saturdaynight Carlos Trejo from Mexico turned in a more impressive 81-point effort aboard Hitman to win the night and $500.
It was an unusual Friday night with no qualified runs in the tie-down roping, but Saturday Colton Childs from Cleburne took the win with an 11.83 effort, paying him $174.84.
Kaity Ray from Cleburne won Friday’s breakaway roping with an impressive 2.4, paying her 174.84. Colby Armour from Weatherford won Saturday’s breakaway roping and $314.71 with a 2.72.
Ashleigh Pippenger from Banning, CA., won Friday’s barrel racing with a 15.53, worth $174.84. Times were much quicker Saturday night and the payout more lucrative with Paige Dove from Hico winning $437 with a 14.34.
Joel Bach from Mount Vernon and Neil Hudson from Winnsboro stretched their steer in 6.76 to win $440.35 each. There were no qualified runs Friday night.
